Quite honestly I can imagine any Bennett being able to undo the Originals spell since it was Ayanna’s spell and Esther had to channel Ayanna’s magic to do it. It’s probably like the PW where it’s a Bennett spell that only a Bennett can undo.
She had, in essence, heard his half-assed apology. “I wanted to apologize for anything I did that hurt you.”
She had all but smoothed the edges of her anxiety from the sensory overload when Damon showed up, which was weird since she got off the phone with him not an hour ago. Still, relief filled her up at the familiar face. She couldn’t quite hear him over the bass of the music but easily sensed his apprehension at something she couldn’t yet grasp.
That’s when he stepped into view. At the sight of him in the dimly lit hallway, a flush came over her.
I’m honestly not mourning these people not posting about Kat because like you said they don’t deserve her time and it’s not like it would be anything nice–it would be literally be exactly like why Kat is in the show. So Plec can essentially say “I’m not racist I have a black friend.”
But yeah, there’s this irrational hate towards Bonnie’s character that essentially devolves into “she’s mean to my favorite character” which of course trickles down into the fandom onto Kat. Most usually take the “of you don’t have nothing nice to say don’t say nothing at all” but others take to insulting Kat and usually in racist way because with all the changes from the book to the show the one the fandom fixated onnmost was that they made Bonnie black.
Me at Esther Mikaelson being called the Original witch:
I think this was the point when I realized “wow, this show has really lazy stupid writing”.
Ikr, and this is season 3 when the writer was “good”. She couldn’t have even been called the Original Witch in the episode she’s introduced because the spell that makes her famous isn’t even her spell–it’s one she got from another witch who got it from her ancestors. I get that they wanted to give her a fancy title as the mother of the originals and creator of vampires, but maybe a name that’s accurate and doesn’t over estimate her.
I mean Qetsiyah, creator of the immortality spell (because Silas didn’t do shit but take credit for her work) and the other side, doesn’t even have a title like that and she’s miles ahead of Esther in power and a lot closer to being called the Original Witch (even though it’s still not true because witches are born not created).
Like I said in the tags she’s not the Original Witch, she’s just white.
EXACTLY!!
How freaking stupid was that?! She’s the “Original Witch” and it wasn’t even her spell and she wasn’t the one who cast it! (there was another witch with her, right?)
Qetsiyah was awesome. She deserves that title.
I got a name for Esther – The 1000 year old White Witch who took credit for other, much more epic witches’ work.
^^^ this.
And I always hated what her introduction pretty much told us as the audience. Again, what I said in the tags, she’s just the first white witch to be introduced. Up until that point all witches had been black, and all those witches were servants of some kind usual vampires. It was something noted and not appreciated in the slightest. Then the first witch with agency, the first witch not to be serving , but has people serving her is a 1000 white woman who’s most famous spell is not one she created but stole from a black witch who was serving her.
Up until her introduction the writers could have at least claimed ignorance, but that was just so blatantly racist that I’m actually surprised that that wasn’t what Plec got called out for but instead the Kennett controversy.
Yep. That’s it. Honestly, I’m shocked that the treatment of witches – up until that point and past that point – wasn’t the “…hold on, we need to address this/fix this” moment because, like you said, all the witches were black and were servants to the vampires (pretty poorly treated by them, too)… and it kept going.. and going.. the racism is blatant, writers.
(your tags are always epic, btw)
And that’s the thing, they did improve the treatment of witches, but only the white witches, so they could think the did a job well done. I mean think about it, Esther, Liv, Davina, Jo, Kai, the Gemini coven, the heretics (all except for one who happened to be black and mute and even the Asian one to a degree), all had an amount of agency that no black witch has ever had, and way more than Bonnie ever got in her entire 8 seasons on the show. Seriously ignorance cannot account for this because if just how blatant it is.
You would think they would want to improve that but as situations like this and many like it prove they’re perfectly content with their racism and will go out of their way to stay as racist as possible.
Actually they were worse then. No one actually really paid attention to Bonnie until season 6 and that’s entirely because she became friends with Damon. But even then that sparked a bunch of racist tweets from Delena fans.
Before people were a lot more ignorant and blatant. It was basically like getting all the anon hate now, but then people actually linked it to actually blogs because they didn’t care if they sounded racist. This post which has quite a few links should give a gauge for what it was like then. It follows the events in fandom during season 3 right after they turned Abby, the most blatantly racist the show has ever been, so terrible that the show was boycotted.
Edit: Yhere’s also this post which is just more links to things from back then. Things were pretty intense.
No it’s always been that way. It took time to notice the pattern like how Bonnie is always missing for large periods of time during season, she’s always dressed down compared to the other girls and not in the “I’m not like other girls” way because Elena clearly took that spot in the wardrobe department. But I think this picture explains it best.
Those are the group photos from comicon. Notice Kat’s not in any of them until 2013. I understood why she’s not in the 2009 photo because they were advertising the triangle but after that…there are characters less important to the plot there before her.
Not only is that the notion created, but that was intended. That’s exactly how Plec wanted her view and any time she had to put her front and center she did it begrudgingly. Like Prom, or any event that she got to dress up too, she was usually in the most underwhelming–with the exception of the decade dance. Giving her a love interest, there was very little development and everytime they barely got scene time with both Jeremy and Enzo. If she was the center of a storyline she always lost the most and had to do the most work to the point that they had her value her own life so little. And in the end she always managed to turn thing right around and make them about Elena or Caroline.
For real. She could obviously look better and these are mostly looks she styled herself. Plec and Co. probably scared her for life on letting other people dress her.
And the thing is Nina and Candice aren’t ugly in any sense however Plec knew if she was ever able to dress like this she would outshine her basic ass characters and that’s on her. If she wanted more interesting main characters she should have written some because downplaying Kat’s beauty did her no favors in that department because they were still basic, and Bonnie was still her most interesting female character now just in frumpy clothes.
