Because the writers of TVD are hacks, and the only plots they could ever come up with involved killing the only Black cast member – so to ship Bonnie with ANYBODY is to ship her with a potential murderer. Because Julie Plec and the producers of TVD obviously had something against Kat Graham.
I think the Bonnie ships of seasons 1-6 came about because we were all so desperate to see her be treated like a human being. To see that women of color were desired and not just pawns to the storyline. And as fans, we wanted it so bad we were willing to look BEYOND the storyline.
I think the decision to put her with Jeremy was just a way to lessen the impact of her character. To make Bonnie the “ugly friend”, the “lost girl”. To make her less than Elena and Caroline, like she wasn’t supposed to be on their level of desirability. To make her so disposable and needy that she gave up her virginity to a dude who had cheated on her with a goddamn ghost.
So, we shipped. We made the shitty storylines work for what we wanted to see – something more than every lead male chasing after the same boring white girl, over and over again. Something more than the character with the most power being made to look desperate and worthless in every other way.
Plus the opportunities were blatantly there to pursue any one of Bonnie’s ships, even with all that shitty writing. And the writers blatantly made the decision not to do it.
And Kat Graham has such amazing chemistry with the majority of the male cast, that it made it easy to picture her with any of them. And all of the male cast members were pretty vocal over the years about wanting to work more with her, about being interested in the ‘Bonnie connection.’
Enzo was a cop-out due to all the Bamon hype. Kat and Michael tried, they really did. But it was forced and random, and Bonnie and Enzo made no sense as a couple other than both being desperate and broken. And there was nobody else around.
