Hi, I only started watching tvd recently but I was wondering have the tvd fandom always sidelined Kat or is it just a recent thing because I can’t help but notice they rarely mention/include her in things.

No it’s always been that way. It took time to notice the pattern like how Bonnie is always missing for large periods of time during season, she’s always dressed down compared to the other girls and not in the “I’m not like other girls” way because Elena clearly took that spot in the wardrobe department. But I think this picture explains it best.

Those are the group photos from comicon. Notice Kat’s not in any of them until 2013. I understood why she’s not in the 2009 photo because they were advertising the triangle but after that…there are characters less important to the plot there before her.

“And the thing is Nina and Candice aren’t ugly in any sense”. Exactly but they have an unfair advantage when they’re dressed better than Kat and have all these close ups and slow motion shots of them walking down stairs. Combined with majority of the male characters having been in relationships with them. The notion created is Bonnie/Kat is undesirable and is basically in the background

Not only is that the notion created, but that was intended. That’s exactly how Plec wanted her view and any time she had to put her front and center she did it begrudgingly. Like Prom, or any event that she got to dress up too, she was usually in the most underwhelming–with the exception of the decade dance. Giving her a love interest, there was very little development and everytime they barely got scene time with both Jeremy and Enzo. If she was the center of a storyline she always lost the most and had to do the most work to the point that they had her value her own life so little. And in the end she always managed to turn thing right around and make them about Elena or Caroline.

You know what makes me laugh about tvd ending? Is how hard the Plec tried to make Kat look basic and frumpy? Every season if there was any type of event or ball, Bonnie was never there and if she was, she’d have the most plain ordinary dress so she wouldn’t steal the spotlight. All I know is if they put effort into Bonnies clothes, she would have blown everyone out of the water.

For real. She could obviously look better and these are mostly looks she styled herself. Plec and Co. probably scared her for life on letting other people dress her.

And the thing is Nina and Candice aren’t ugly in any sense however Plec knew if she was ever able to dress like this she would outshine her basic ass characters and that’s on her. If she wanted more interesting main characters she should have written some because downplaying Kat’s beauty did her no favors in that department because they were still basic, and Bonnie was still her most interesting female character now just in frumpy clothes.

“It’s really telling what people decide to focus on.” Right though. Like season 6 was the perfect opportunity for Kat to be the female lead. Because a) Nina had left b) Candice was pregnant c) Bonnie had been the most relevance from the books and d) Bonnie was the only one who was actively pushing the plot since season 1 yet none of those fans were trying to give Bonnie the justice she deserved the way they were when she was cast as black.

Season 7, but yeah. Here’s the thing Plec knew this which is why she kept teasing it, baiting Bonnie fans with more focus, a better love interest, pretty much everything we had been complaining about and delivered on nothing. The best she did was Enzo and absolutely no effort was put into that. They had a whole season to develop them and not only didn’t but had to have a flashback episode that essentially explained fuck-all and then wanted us to think he was the end all be all and be congratulated on this “effort” by Bonnie fandms. Of she didn’t because we see right through her everytime and it’s that Kat/Bonnie is just a box for her to check for diversity, she had no interest in telling her story in any sense.

But even with the sexist comments Nina gets she has a huge bunch of her fans and tvd fans that come to her rescue. Like you cannot even say her eyebrows are too thick without her stans jumping up and down. Tvd fans legit start hashtags if they see one comment that’s not pride to any of the white actors yet in the same breath call Kat petty for clapping back or blocking people. Because no one from the fandom can give a shit about the racist hate Kat gets.

Of course they don’t give a shit because they’re the main curators of it, in fact, most of the racist comments Kat receives are from Nina fans.

Tvd fans see Kat as the least deserving of praise because Bonnie was originally white therefore she would show way more gratitude for being allowed on the show because she’s black. But she got the job because she was the best actress there. Kat even said that there were girls of all races at the auditions but SHE got the job. However the same energy is not given to Nina even though elena in the books had blonde hair and blue eyes neither of which Nina possesses

Candice has neither Auburn hair or green eyes. Jeremy’s a character that simply doesn’t exist neither does Jenna, they’replace holders for Judith and Margaret. Matt’s last name isn’t Donavon, and Vicki isn’t his sister. And yet with all of these cosmetic differences none were made as big of a deal as the fact that Bonnie isn’t Black in the book. It’s really telling what people decide to focus on.

Do you think any of her “friends” actually cared about Bonnie? I saw mentioned that Kai is the only one who made effort to apologize to her. From what I recall, the Mystic Falls gang treated her like a magical fix it and nothing more. Nobody ever really rallied for her like they would for Elena or Caroline in danger. Their group wouldn’t survive five minutes of Bonnie up and left town to start her own life

I think they thought they actually cared about her, but never actually did because when you do you don’t ignore their pain and suffering like that. I think their heads were so far up their own ass, and that they were so used to Bonnie solving it for them that their privilege didn’t allow them to think about her side of things. They only had half-ass comment here and there about her well being but none of that matters unless they actually do anything. Bonnie did things, she was a loyal and good best friend which is funny because you never really hear about that from the characters on the show, but they’ll go on and on about what a good person Elena is despite her never showing those traits, what a great person Caroline is despite her compliance and ability to bend her morals for her friends. Bonnie gets none of that she just gets called judgemental which is a criticism that honesty fits Caroline more but I never see her called, I consistently only see this in reference to black women.

Basically racism was so ingrained in the show and, subsequently, the characters that their version of caring is pretty much the equivalent of a child’s love for their black nanny in every “happy slave” piece of media. They care about her, but only in reference to what they can do for them but TVD’s worse because a child is actually ignorant and can learn, the MFG can’t and as shown by the end of the series, never can learn better.

Plec really gave zero fucks about Bonnie. She literally had her there for diversity points that’s it. And the fact that people constantly go at kat about not coming back for legacies or in general being ‘ungrateful’ is bs. The gratitude is only directed towards Kat despite other cast members openly trashing the show.

Kat can’t so much as breath without getting flack from the TVD fandom. I remember years ago when she was still on the show she did an interview where she said she didn’t identify with Bonnie–it was out of context and she was misquoted–oh dear lord the outcry of the TVD fans all giving the same comments about how she should be grateful and she was rude. That same outcry happened again during her “Twitter-gate” moment where she simply asked people not to tag her in things she’s not in. A simply reasonable request, and even that comment was reasonable because why would someone identify with willingly being the servant of some white girl, but of course because it’s Kat and she’s black she should be nicer and grateful for even being on the show.

Nina only acknowledges fans when she needs to promote something she’s in, Paul has made several scathing comments about the show, Ian noted his dissatisfaction all the time, but none of them get called rude or ungrateful, they actually get praised for how much they seperate themselves from the show. We all know why there’s this difference, but what did we all expect, a racist show can only breed a racist fandom.

Apparently, Plec even had Tyler choose Liv’s well being over Bonnie’s? Wow, so it was basically “This precious white girl is too delicate to deal with Kai, Bonnie is strong. It sucks but life be like that sometimes :/” Bonnie really deserves to set that entire town on fire and peace out

Girl who brought you back from the dead is apparently worth less than the girl who’s sleeping with you.

Or what plec was actually getting at:

White Girl > Bonnie
