kingcobrakai1972:

does anyone else have a hard time with writing damon’s voice in fics? why is his voice so oddly specific

Weirdly I don’t have an issue writing him and you think I would given all the flack I give him but it’s for the reason it’s hard for you, his voice is oddly specific.

When writing his dialogue I I always make sure he’s never direct. I do that with most characters because I don’t like dialogue as exposition but with him I have to do it in a special way where to the point that he’s avoiding whatever the topic is altogether because that’s his characterization.

His actions I can make sense of when writing because while his impulsive randomness is apart of his characterization Plec still managed to make that OOC, but I use the same rule as with his dialogue, never direct, does everything to avoid being direct because no matter what it’s never something he wants to do. Which is also a weird facet of his character, with as selfish and self serving as he is he never really does the thing he wants to, everything is an inconvenience.

But probably what you’re having issues with is that though his voice is oddly specific, it’s also all over the place, particularly when Elena is involved. Considering you like this ship to a degree you might get his actions while he’s with her or their about her, but from what I’ve observed they turn his character into what I’m going to call PlecBot which essentially is doing everything Plec wants him to do via fanservice and completely ignoring his characterization.

Like when Elena broke up with him and he starts murdering mindlessly. Now him being a murderer isn’t news or out of the ordinary but his motives were as in he had none. His reasoning for killing has always been off, but there was at least some semblance of logic to it, like he’s hungry, annoyed, hell I’ll even take bored as a reason because that’s right up his alley. But randomly killing people with a guy you feel guilty about because he’s sad??? doesn’t make a lick of sense since that’s not what he does when he’s sad, he wallows, kills people and wallows, but always wallows which none of that happens. In fact I would even say he was sad which brings me back to what are you motives?

And over the course of the show he’s done several things in this vein that makes you ask, “what are you motives?” The answer usually is “to create Delena drama” which is stopped watching in season 5 because they had exhausted that with me, a casual viewer, bu that point. Anyway my point is that he has some very specific and strong characterization that often gets lost in Plec’s Delena fantasy which makes him a hard character to peg down because his identity almost seems like to be that but it’s not. That’s not a character, it’s Enzo (who I’ve often described as pieces of a character) but if he had something distinguishable about him. And there are distinguishable things about him unfortunately they aren’t there much after season 1 maybe 2 and they do sorta come back more frequently in seasons 6-8 but as long as his sole motives are “delena drama” without any basis for it they become lost and that masks his character (pretty well I might add).

The Vampire Diaries Honest Trailer: Starring

I mean, no offense, you’re no Emily Bennett.

“Why did you stand up to Katherine for me?

“Because as much as we like to pretend otherwise, no person is property.”

“But no one can resist Katherine’s charms.”

“She’s not charming if she can treat you like that.”

“Whatever happens next remember this; remember that you knew what she really was.”

Based on my earlier post, nothing is concrete or even being written, but I just wanted to see how pretty they could have been together.

Preacher AU:

That’s why we’re gonna go out and actually find God,”  Damon said as though that was a simple task.

“Oh, like a–like a road trip? With buckets of guns, sex, drugs, and shady characters dressed in bikinis?” Kai said with the excitement of a kid in a candy shop.

“Yeah. I imagine there’ll be a bit of that.”

“I’m in. Done.”

“I’m sorry, we’re just gonna, like, drive around, shooting people, getting sated, and looking for God?” Birdy interjected–the only one with any sense.

“Oh, I’m so in!”

Damon x Emily

So when I made my top 10 non-canon ships I realized I left this one out and I guess I’m kinda glad because because I’m going to talk about it more in depth.

So this to me is the route they should have gone for 1864, but I knew they never would since S1 they were still trying to follow the book, however I do feel they should have adapted to the time period they chose because it’s definitely not the one in the book–they chose the civil war era and completely ignored the context of that and I will never not be annoyed by that.

Anyway back to Demily??? This is actually one of my early on ships that I though about back in the day. I always felt that they were not only the more interesting route, but a better way of executing Damon’s characterization. He’s a former confederate soldier who left the war because he didn’t agree with it and that’s all that’s actually said on the subject–nothing is ever expanded on that, he just doesn’t agree. Putting him with Emily would have definitely clarified that a lot more.

Another thing it would have clarified is why Emily saved Damon and why she trusted him with her family. I never quite saw the vested interest she had in either Salvatore but especially Damon. Stefan she at least says he has a kind heart, Damon she actively criticizes him for not being as good as Stefan, so again why save him and trust him without a more concrete history.

I know we always talk about this in context of Bonnie, but I do feel it’s just as relevant to Emily, it would have definitely upgraded her character from something more than just “compliant” slave. There were so many other things that could have been done and I do feel that with Damon and any Bennett it upgrades his likability (I honestly only find him somewhat likable when he’s with Bonnie).

Plus I’m a sucker for forbidden romances but only when a) it’s not incest I don’t do incest maybe a step-sibling but if their blood related I’m out immediately, and b) I actually feels forbidden. The human x vampire never felt all that forbidden to me especially around the point TVD first aired, it was very overdone to the point that “forbidden” just became typical–there really was never the risk they hyped in almost every vampire story. Damon and Emily feel forbidden to me just due to the context. They’re in the South during the Civil War, Emily is a slave, Damon is a former confederate soldier who left because he didn’t share their philosophy–neither can be seen in public together at risk of lynching. There’s just so much there to make a compelling interesting love story between the two that I felt was completely lacking with Katherine.Actually I always feel like there’s a lot of things lacking with Katherine but I won’t get into it.

Looking through my notes with many many story ideas I actually do have one for them:

Damon falls in love with Emily in 1864. She falls pregnant and gives birth before he’s turned. She tasks him with saving their family. He protests, urges her not to give up and even tries to turn her, but she’s adamant about not going against nature. When she’s burned he gets their family out but then spends the next century wanting revenge over Katherine for turning Emily in and turning him into a vampire along with Stefan.

I do plan on writing it at some point but waay down the line when I’ve finished at least one of my WIPs and there’s more of a developed idea there.

Conclusion: Damon x Emily would have been an awesome ship that I wish there was more fics about.

“You know Bon Bon, you deserve better than a lying jackass who cheats on his wife.”

Bonnie moves her head from the crook of his shoulder to look up at him. “If he’s a jackass, what does that make me?”

“The most understanding woman on the planet.” He laughs at his own stupid joke and she soon follows in laughter moving back to the passenger seat.

When the laughter dies down she gets pensive again. “Seriously Damon, what kind of woman sleeps with a married man and expects him to leave his wife and child?” Her voice breaks near the end.

Damon looks at her with a sympathetic smile. “One who hasn’t completely given up on romance. Trust me, Bon, you’ll find someone else in no time, and he won’t be married, and then you can tell Elena and Caroline all about him, and all will be good,” he says definitively.

“And what makes you think it’ll be that easy?”

Damon has always been random as fuck

When I reflect on Damon’s first appearance in season 1 and what he did to Caroline I always get confused as to why he did that to Caroline. It’s not so much I don’t understand why he would rape someone or even Caroline, he’s a predator. He explains exactly why he picks her in 4×04. It’s just that it doesn’t match up with he motives for coming to Mystic Falls.

He’s there for the comet to get Katherine out of the tomb. For such he needs Bonnie, but he doesn’t even approach her until Caroline gives her Emily’s talisman, something he didn’t plan for. He makes it clear that he’s using Caroline to accomplish his goal, but she’s literally useless to him. She’s not a Bennett witch, she’s barely friends with Elena, and while she is closer to Bonnie that friendship isn’t that strong either, at least for anything he planned for.

So again why Caroline? As much as I hate the idea, Bonnie should have been his target. Granted she’s a hell of a lot harder to manipulate, but manipulating Caroline wasn’t getting him anywhere and nor was it ever going to. Damon is a lot of things, but stupid isn’t one of them. It’s part of what makes everything he does so awful because he’s fully aware of exactly what he’s doing.

And if we want to delve deeper why didn’t he actually keep his end of the bargin with Emily knowing he’d need one of her descendents one day? It’s a lot easier to get something from someone when you’ve built a rapport with them and that’s actually something he knows. It’s never really been a new concept that his actions don’t match his motives, but you’d think they would try to have some consistency in the first season.

So honestly, what the fuck was Damon doing in season 1? Now keep in mind this is one of the better seasons, the one ran by Plec and Williamson, and it’s things like this that make me wonder why Williamson gets a lot if praise when it comes to TVD. Is he better than Plec? Yes. But is his overall writing better for the show? No, he’s contributed to a lot of the problematic aspects of the show and they start as early as the pilot because in general Caroline should have never been raped because Caroline doesn’t even fit in the plot there. It’s bad enough that it’s never acknowledged, but the fact that it was completely unnecessary to begin with just makes it even worse.

She doesn’t even fit into the idea in showing how brutal vampires can be because that’s what Vicki was for and the way she’s brutalized is at least consistent with necessary vampire behavior. The way Caroline is treated was unnecessary from the jump because again in 4×04, his usual routine does not involve raping them. Physically and mentally abusing them? Yes, but rape no. “Snach, eat, erase.” There’s nothing about Caroline for him to deviate from this. I know rape isn’t about logic, but storytelling is, especially for what impact you’re going for and this doesn’t serve for anything. It’s not impactful because Damon is never held accountable for it and it makes no sense to the plot. It’s just simple bad writing.

The show would have been better off with Caroline and Matt from the start and her living her normal because that was the one thing I liked about season 1, that they didn’t live in a vacuum where only them and the supernatural exists. That there were people in the dark simply living. It provided a nice contrast to the chaos of everything else.

I know I’ve veered off from my original point of Damon having always been random, but seriously how did anyone buy him as a character past the first season when he literally has no motives or objectives? He was essentially a random character doing random shit and has never had consistency.
