kingcobrakai1972:
1.) The heretics presumably were no longer Geminis when they killed themselves and became vampires, even if they retained witch powers. We can assume this because Kai killing himself doesn’t actually kill them, even though the Gemini coven leader dying kills the entire coven. With this in mind, Kai saying that he’s killing Lizzie and Josie because he’s worried about them becoming the coven leaders makes no sense– because Kai already had plans to become a heretic, which renders him non-gemini.
2.) This kind of leads into my next point. Kai killing himself kills the entire coven. You would think this includes the babies in Jo’s womb. I guess this one can be explained away by the spell, but.. ugh.
3.) Even IF the spell explains why Lizzie and Josie survived, it doesn’t explain what happens.. to them? If we assume the Gemini Coven works similarly to the New Orleans witches in the Originals, we can also assume that the twin-merge acts as some kind of refresher for the coven’s magic source (just like the ancestral magic/ sacrificing etc). If there is no coven leader anymore and Lizzie and Josie are the last ones… how do they subsist, first of all? Second, what happens if they don’t merge as adults? Will they be rendered magicless? Or do siphons retain magical siphoning abilities even if deprived of their coven witch-magic? There are just a lot of questions here that I’m not sure were thought out.
I feel like a lot of the rushed stuff was a result of the writers trying to get Nina off the show in a way that made sense, but still something to think about.
I wouldn’t exactly say getting Nina off the show in a way that makes sense is the reason since all they had to do was kill her. There were plenty of enemies over the years that could have easily done that or have her die the human route, like getting hit by a bus.
Kai’s rushed ending was very deliberate to get HIM off the show due to a number of reasons.
There’s the fake reason about Containment which does make much sense since he started filming that before his departure on TVD and since it only had 13 episodes he was more than likely done.
There’s the real reason which is that he got too popular at the expense of Plec’s ego. You see the majority of what was written for Kai and Bonkai wasn’t written by her. The majority if the praise for season 6 was for something she didn’t write nor intend to get popular. She was very content backing her failing horse Damon and Delena (probably why she delegated the writing of Kai/Bonkai to other writers) and thought the vocal, but not numerous fan base of such would save her show.
One thing that’s not news is the fact that she’s petty, so as a result Kai dies and so does every chance season 7 had of being good. And to add the icing on top she had to ruin the Bamon friendship (the only other thing working that season) by connecting Elena to Bonnie, so I just assumed that’s when she was throwing in the towel.
As for the twins surviving, I’m very sure that’s something she pulled out of her ass the moment Candice announced her pregnancy. Because she already couldn’t fathom Bonnie as lead (said this herself that she didn’t find the value of Bonnie’s character until season 6 which says a lot and explains even more) she built an entire storyline around her other failing horse Caroline/Steroline.
Now I don’t actually hate Caroline or Steroline, but even if written better they weren’t really ever leading material, they weren’t interesting enough. They were at best meant to be like Lily and Marshal or Monica and Chandler (who I both love) the stable couple/storyline but never the complete main focus.
So the fact that the twins are still alive was always an anomaly because you’re right, it wasn’t well thought out, it was a last minute fix it added on top of the fact that I’m pretty sure they gave up on all continuity in season 5 with that monstrosity (there’s too many to name, that entire season needs to be retconned and thrown in the fire).
