That’s what I mean sometimes I’ll see an interview and she seems so basic and then she’ll light up and it just feels like an act. Like the cute school girl think gets boring once you’re thirty tbh. But again I don’t understand hard core support for someone who doesn’t act like they give a fuck

I don’t understand it and I do at the same time. She has hardcore support for pretty much the same reason Ian does and that’s because of The Vampire Diaries and the hype the show gave both of the characters they portrayed.

Julie kept calling them “passionate” but let’s call a spade a spade, they were bat shit crazy. A good portion of her fan base is just Delena fans, which is a fandom known for being loud which is why she uses them when she needs to promote something. DE has one of the most toxic fans I’ve ever seen, but she doesn’t denounce them, at least the way Ian did, because she knows that they can come in handy sometime and will never go anywhere.

It’s also worth noting that she can’t denounce them the way Ian did. As a male he does have an advantage here where he won’t get completely trashed by the fandom and his career if he does where Nina won’t. So that is a factor in that but either way she does have control still by ignoring them, which she does, often.

Essentially her bat shit crazy fans are the left overs from TVD and the worst of them which is why she and the other cast members have several people at their defense when something negative is said about them. Kat has no such luck.

However that’s also because of the kinds of insults that’ll get sent your way for defending Kat which are usually racially charged and I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to deal with that kind of bullshit. Defending the other cast members the worst thing that gets thrown around is being called an idiot by someone who’s clearly illiterate.

Guys, I found another rabbit hole!

But this one is much shorter and not as long ago, this is circa Season 6.

So after my ask about Nina Dobrev I decided to look a little more into her. I still have only scratched the surface and I’m keeping it that way because what I’ve found is unpleasant enough here and here and that goes well beyond hanging out with Johnny Depp or any petty squabble people seem to think is happening between her and Ian.

ANYWAY what I found in the rabbit hole was much more juicy than that. So I first came across this post and was real curious about an apparent social media beef between Kat and Nina. So after searching through the notes I found this.

Now I was really curious what this had to do with Nina and why she was side-eying her and then found this first which just fueled my search even more and then I found the post that sparked this.

You know, I always thought downgrading Elena’s character in season 6 was not only one of the best decisions the show made but Nina’s decision since she was leaving. Apparently not because this is some passive aggression at its finest.

First, she had to set an inanimate object close to her cat, second that comment, I don’t know how to take that other than directed toward Kat given what Ms.Cuddles represented on the show at the time, and lastly how cutesy did she think calling Ms.Cuddles a “fake bitch” was because that didn’t even sound like sarcasm.

I honestly never realized how much vitriol she fueled in the fandom towards Kat because I’m sure DE fans just ate this up and used it as inspiration for some of the racist tweets she received that year over Bamon getting close.

👏🏼👏🏼 that’s what I mean. You cannot say anything other than praise and adoration for the rest of the cast because fans will attack you and start dumb hashtags in support of them. But that same energy is not kept for Kat, when she gets hate they ignore it and when she claps back or blocks people she’s the one that’s immature and unprofessional. And like you said they see her as undeserving of any success because she shouldn’t even be there in the first place.

Pretty much throw the whole fandom away honestly.

I agree with everything you said. Because Bonnie was a character that sacrificed everything for her white counterparts they have this weird thing that Kat, a black woman cannot be the successful one now tvd has ended because they’ve been accustomed to her getting the short end of the stick. I’ve seen Nina fans go to great lengths to make out as if Kat and Bonnie are nothing compared to Nina. It’s safe to say Candice is either done with acting or will stay on JP shows. 1/2

Ian is funny because he hates his ship but still attends cons to hear teenaged girls scream his name, but his fans think he can do no wrong. Paul fans come across as self righteous at times. They love to label Kat as problematic whereas Paul has mentioned his love for woody Allen multiple times. Which is another thing. Obviously I’m generalising because I don’t know all of them but one thing that’s apparent is that they cannot leave Bonnie/Kat alone, she’s always seen as a threat 2/2

And the funny part about it is that they only see Kat as the threat. I don’t see any of this hate when it comes to the other actors and when there is there’s always someone there to jump to their defense so they never even have to acknowledge it. Kat, much like Bonnie, has always had to fight her own battles, and that’s not to say she doesn’t have people coming to her defense, but the fandom gets real real quiet when something bad is said about her (or Bonnie for that matter).

To them she was never even supposed to be cast as Bonnie because of the color of her skin in the first place, so the fact that she’s having any success after that just kills them.

Different anon, but the think I’ve noticed is tvd fans rarely acknowledge Kat as part of the cast. Like most tvd fan pages never post about her and if they do it’s rare and always a comparison post. Instead they’ll post actresses from TO which is odd considering out of the whole cast Kat seems to be the one who interacts with fans the most. Then again they don’t really deserve her time.

I’m honestly not mourning these people not posting about Kat because like you said they don’t deserve her time and it’s not like it would be anything nice–it would be literally be exactly like why Kat is in the show. So Plec can essentially say “I’m not racist I have a black friend.”

But yeah, there’s this irrational hate towards Bonnie’s character that essentially devolves into “she’s mean to my favorite character” which of course trickles down into the fandom onto Kat. Most usually take the “of you don’t have nothing nice to say don’t say nothing at all” but others take to insulting Kat and usually in racist way because with all the changes from the book to the show the one the fandom fixated onnmost was that they made Bonnie black.

What about the fans? Have they always been dicks towards her or is it a recent thing? Like when watching tvd it’s obvious Bonnie is a token because they do nothing with her character unless it benefits the white characters but have tvd viewers always been trash?

Actually they were worse then. No one actually really paid attention to Bonnie until season 6 and that’s entirely because she became friends with Damon. But even then that sparked a bunch of racist tweets from Delena fans.

Before people were a lot more ignorant and blatant. It was basically like getting all the anon hate now, but then people actually linked it to actually blogs because they didn’t care if they sounded racist. This post which has quite a few links should give a gauge for what it was like then. It follows the events in fandom during season 3 right after they turned Abby, the most blatantly racist the show has ever been, so terrible that the show was boycotted.

Edit: Yhere’s also this post which is just more links to things from back then. Things were pretty intense.

Hi, I only started watching tvd recently but I was wondering have the tvd fandom always sidelined Kat or is it just a recent thing because I can’t help but notice they rarely mention/include her in things.

No it’s always been that way. It took time to notice the pattern like how Bonnie is always missing for large periods of time during season, she’s always dressed down compared to the other girls and not in the “I’m not like other girls” way because Elena clearly took that spot in the wardrobe department. But I think this picture explains it best.

Those are the group photos from comicon. Notice Kat’s not in any of them until 2013. I understood why she’s not in the 2009 photo because they were advertising the triangle but after that…there are characters less important to the plot there before her.

“And the thing is Nina and Candice aren’t ugly in any sense”. Exactly but they have an unfair advantage when they’re dressed better than Kat and have all these close ups and slow motion shots of them walking down stairs. Combined with majority of the male characters having been in relationships with them. The notion created is Bonnie/Kat is undesirable and is basically in the background

Not only is that the notion created, but that was intended. That’s exactly how Plec wanted her view and any time she had to put her front and center she did it begrudgingly. Like Prom, or any event that she got to dress up too, she was usually in the most underwhelming–with the exception of the decade dance. Giving her a love interest, there was very little development and everytime they barely got scene time with both Jeremy and Enzo. If she was the center of a storyline she always lost the most and had to do the most work to the point that they had her value her own life so little. And in the end she always managed to turn thing right around and make them about Elena or Caroline.

You know what makes me laugh about tvd ending? Is how hard the Plec tried to make Kat look basic and frumpy? Every season if there was any type of event or ball, Bonnie was never there and if she was, she’d have the most plain ordinary dress so she wouldn’t steal the spotlight. All I know is if they put effort into Bonnies clothes, she would have blown everyone out of the water.

For real. She could obviously look better and these are mostly looks she styled herself. Plec and Co. probably scared her for life on letting other people dress her.

And the thing is Nina and Candice aren’t ugly in any sense however Plec knew if she was ever able to dress like this she would outshine her basic ass characters and that’s on her. If she wanted more interesting main characters she should have written some because downplaying Kat’s beauty did her no favors in that department because they were still basic, and Bonnie was still her most interesting female character now just in frumpy clothes.

But even with the sexist comments Nina gets she has a huge bunch of her fans and tvd fans that come to her rescue. Like you cannot even say her eyebrows are too thick without her stans jumping up and down. Tvd fans legit start hashtags if they see one comment that’s not pride to any of the white actors yet in the same breath call Kat petty for clapping back or blocking people. Because no one from the fandom can give a shit about the racist hate Kat gets.

Of course they don’t give a shit because they’re the main curators of it, in fact, most of the racist comments Kat receives are from Nina fans.
