why was kai a ted (or sub-ted) as opposed to say a barney?

1) He had wangst from the get-go. Wangst = the weight of the world is on my shoulders because of My Special Pain. In Kai’s case being the misfit in his family, a siphoner, while his other siblings had their own magic.

2) He wasn’t set up as a foil to another male character. He interacted with Damon, yes, but he wasn’t there to shed a light on Damon or to advance Damon’s narrative.

3) He was a sub-Ted rather than a Ted because his values did not dominate the entire ‘verse. If Kai had been a Ted then TVD would’ve ranked Bonnie and Jo as the most important female protagonists (with Bonnie >>> Jo) and Elena and Caroline would’ve been irrelevant.

@candyumbrella so do you think there was real potential for a bonkai spin-off? or for kai to eclipse stefan as the ted of tvd and the story be structured around him and Bonnie?

Hmm, I’m
not sure. It’s an interesting question but obvs it’s just my spec at the
end of the day, so take this with a pinch or more of salt…

Thanks so much for responding. I loved everything and this was my best part from under the cut:

Look at how Bonnie and Elena are positioned relative to each other in 6×13—Bonnie takes the role that the Robin would usually play, with ALL the men united in their efforts to rescue her and her being their #1 motivation, Elena is peripheral.

This just makes me happy and mad at the same time.
