A little (a lot) late to this realization, but on Monday I just realized how ridiculous it sounds that Donald Trump is our president. Now I always knew it was ridiculous especially given his actions before his presidency and his actions right now, but on Monday night for the first time I heard it out loud.

So I’m in an EMT program and we’re learning about primary assessments which has this acronym (but not really since it doesn’t really mean much pneumonicly) GI/H/MS/C/A/B/C/DP and the MS means Mental Status which is where you check how alert and oriented a patient is. We were practicing medical assessment and in this one of my classmates is checking the mental status of the patient which is, if they can speak, done by asking their name, where they’re at, and the time. My classmates deviates from that a bit but it’s still a valid question in asking about the time. He asks, “Who is the president?”

My other classmate who’s playing the patient first smiles and laughs and then says “Donald Trump?”

I at first laugh at this because it sounds like a joke answer. I mean come on, the guy who’s claim to fame is being a rich asshole is the president? But then I take a step back and realize that’s he’s completely serious and he was laughing because the question caught him off guard. And even worse is when I realized it not a lie—it’s not some Futurama episode—this is real he is our president which is something I knew just didn’t hear it out loud until then. It sounded ridiculous and still is ridiculous. I really feel bad for dementia/alzheimers who have to be jolted with that information when they think Bill Clinton or Bush is in office because it really does sound like someone is messing with you when they say it out loud.
