Tyler stops Liv from doing the spell and they meet Delena in the graveyard.
Elena: NO!
Tyler: I’m sorry. Kai is here and he’s going to kill Liv! He almost did a few minutes ago.
Damon: We were almost there. We drove half-way across country to meet her there*. It was the Delena road trip to end all road-trips. Who would have thought Elena and I listening to old 90s music in my Camaro and talking about how awesome Bonnie is would make us love each other again? It was certainly far more romantic than sitting in the old Gilbert house, reminiscing and guilt tripping while Bonnie bursted her ass driving 7 hours across country.
Elena: And Bonnie was literally five minutes away!
Tyler: I know. I’m trying to save Liv…
Elena: You mean, the way Bonnie saved your life! It shouldn’t be a choice, you ingrate!
Tyler: Do you think this is easy for me?! I love Bonnie, OK? I’m helping to get her back. But Kai is here, now. That means he’s not in the prison world with Bonnie. Bonnie is safe from him. It’s Liv that is in danger now and Bonnie… we’ll get her back. We have everything we need to get her back, OK? But we’re not going to get her back today or any other day if you kill the only Gemini witch who’s going to help us.
*Very important this.
I mean, it still sucks that Bonnie gets shafted. But at least, have Tyler actually feel bad about it. Have Tyler actually give some good sound logic for it – besides Jo’s life is more important to me than Bonnie’s.
You are on fire with these posts.
They are so cathartic to write. I mean, it’s really just a few words here, a few changes there. There’s a bonafide logical reason for Tyler to prioritise Liv over Bonnie in that moment. But it’s like… the writers don’t even think there should be a reason, you know?
This scene and the one your re-wrote for Alaric are probably the biggest reasons why I’m not a fan of those characters at all. I’ve never disliked Tyler. I even understand and sympathize with his need to protect Liv (she stopped him from becoming a werewolf, that’s a pretty big deal), but I never could get down with the complete disregard for Bonnie in this situation and that the writers didn’t think to have him come back and explain.
Alaric on the other hand. I don’t think I’ve ever really cared for him but those episodes where he’s putting Jo over Bonnie made me dislike him to an extreme. And there was never a conversation between Jo and Alaric about Bonnie (which made me want to side-eye Jo, in the assumption that she knew what was up). I wondered why the writers didn’t just have Damon go to Jo directly and explain what was going on.
Everything about this plot point doesn’t make sense unless you’re coming from the perspective that the writers hate Bonnie. Why should Elena be so angry that Damon compelled Alaric for the Ascendant? How is that the Greatest Evil in any circumstance at all, and when you throw in the fact that he does it to save Bonnie…? I mean, could the writers make it more clear how little Bonnie is worth to anybody? Why is Elena more worried about Jo and Alaric than about Bonnie? Why does Stefan have a problem with it? Why is this a … struggle for anybody in this story?
And like you said… why didn’t Damon straight up ask Jo himself? And since from the Friendsgiving episode, it seems to be clear to Jo and the rest that Bonnie is trapped in the same Hell as Kai… why doesn’t Jo herself go, “OMG, we need to get her out of there before Kai murders her many times?” I mean, if anyone should know how dangerous Kai is, it’s his sister, right? And if Jo decides to go, “OMG, I’m really sorry about your friend but I can’t risk Kai coming out. I know, totally selfish and all but dem’s the breaks”… then let’s have MFG call her out for it. Let’s Elena do that guilt-tripping spiel that she’s excellent for. Let Caroline go all Vampire Barbie rage on Jo’s arse. Let Tyler give Liv a speech about how if not for Bonnie, he’d never have got a chance to fall in love with her. Let Alaric stick his head out of his ass for five seconds and say, “I’m going to make sure Kai doesn’t hurt you, Jo. But if after all that you still don’t want to help this girl who has only ever helped everybody else, then I don’t know you and I don’t want to know you.”
Yes! And in hindsight, leaving Bonnie there with Kai is how Kai got out in the first place! He needed Bennett blood to make the ascendant work…well he had entire elfin-like body full of it to get him out. I didn’t quite understand why Damon never explained that to Alaric either…
OMG. Yes. *face-smack.* I had even forgotten about that. Wasn’t that the whole reason why Pa Parker wanted to kill Jo? Because he realized that with a Bennett witch in 1994, the missing link in Kai’s PrisonBreak was complete? For entirely selfish reasons, Jo should have been the first to go… “OMG, let’s get that Bennett witch away from my brother before he uses her to escape.”
I mean, when you think about it what was the big deal about the Ascendant in our world? Kai didn’t need it to get out unless someone was going back to get him.
*face palm* There were so many plot holes in this plot that … BOGGLES. I mean, it really seems like if the writers were so blind to their hatred of Bonnie that they started writing other characters (Alaric, Tyler, Elena, Jo) as not only assholes, but stupid assholes at that.
Ways TVD S6 could have been awesome (Bonnie centric), part 3
